In an attempt to respond to environmental changes in the industry, KOMIPO established "The Mid and Long term Research and Development Plan" during a 10-year period in July, 2005. The Core Technology Development of the Next Generation's Thermal Power' and 'The Low Carbon Technology Development against Climate Change' is at the center of attention with KOMIPO's planning to invest a total of some 442 billion won by 2014 in the ten major research areas, including the better reliability in facilities, digital auto-control technology, preventive technology of environmental pollution and renewable energy technology.

Taking into account the fact that the basic and applied research in the power generation field takes long periods of time to analyze as well as incurring high costs to practical plans along with an optimal portfolio have been created and are being conducted jointly with many suitable research institutes.

As of 2007, domestic power companies are co-participating in carrying out about 45 core and strategic technology research at the government level including 'the development of life span detecting technology while operational cessation','the flue gas desulfuization study for 500MW Korean type standard coal-fired power plants' etc. Meanwhile, as part of our efforts towards the practical plans, KOMIPO has aggressively pursued on-site technology development on its own, in particular, about three projects which are underway, including the domestic fire detection technology development which use gas turbines.

Amid efforts to secure advanced technology, joint R&D with the EPRI and European research institutes on environment policies are underway. We are moving towards future-oriented core technology development and as part of those efforts, we are trying to utilize new thermal power technology, as well as information from European environmental policies that include 'the development of gas turbine operational and maintenance technology', 'the causes and countermeasures concerning boiler accidents' and 'the development on maintenance guide for plants'.
